Nice post, Trey. Yes, there are a lot of people our there actively pursuing Galt's Gulch as an alternative to Obamanirvana. I trust it won't be long before the looters have explored the bitter end of their misguided policies and look up wondering where all the producers have gone. It's already happened in places like Detroit.

My hope is that the great southward migration of looters does not hit Texas too soon. I don't mind people coming here to try their hand at doing better in life. What I don't like is the influx of their politics, seasoned in places like the west coast, east coast, and Chicago. Come make a better life for yourselves, but leave those idiotic, liberal socialist ideas where you came from.

Texas is Galt's Gulch.

I thought describing myself as "snotty" gave me a little license to be just that. But, then, it's been awhile since I last read the (bestselling!) Rules of Critical Conduct According to Phillip J. Hubbell.

You want to read an annoying, pompous, brilliant but sophomoric asshole who can write, read Sartre. You want to read an annoying, pompous, brilliant but sophomoric asshole who can't, read Ayn Rand. This is from my rulebook. And yes, thank you, it enjoys a substantial niche readership in Japan. Or the Marshall Islands. One of those Pacific-y places, I believe.

I am always amazed at how belittling people who have never published anything ...let alone something as widely read as Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead, of Ms Rand's writing ability.

All these critcism should begin...."Ayn Rand writes almost and badly as I do"...and then give us a chart to show her book sales and yours. I am guessing they are disdainful of all popular fiction. Those extremely successful writers who can't write well...damn them.

Those who speak of themselves in the third person are denied the right to criticize Ayn Rand.

Daniel actually agrees with Trey (although he finds little difference between the major political parties vis-a-vis, well, most things; Repubs are loathe to raise taxes, it's true, but taxes ain't squat compared to the hyperinflation we likely face thanks to "both" parties' reckless arrogance and proofligacy, particularly that of the last two Chief Executives) , and thus found it superfluous to respond.

Additionally, he's picked up a loathesome habit of referring to himself in the third person, and he's embarrassed to show himself until this ghastly disfigurement has been cleared up. So just don't look directly at him, please.

Well, he'll at least say this: Ayn Rand is an absolutely terrible writer by every metric known to man. Too bad she never found something she was good at -- she might have made a perfectly middling architect, drafting hopital annexes and whatnot.

Snotty enough for you, Amanda?

I've thought about this post all day, and my manager and I had a long discussion about what underlies Trey's (and my and his) frustration/anger. I can say that not only do I feel your pain but that your pain is mine.

I've pondered many times over the past few months, with increasing frequency and intensity over the past few weeks and days, the question of how I might create my own Galt's gulch, or find one to join. I'm not wealthy, but I'm a hard worker; and like Dagney, I'd clean somebody's house for room and board - and for that most delicious cigarette that I had earned.

Today: Nancy Pelosi wants to raid our garages and give us $2,500 each for our old cars; the UAW will own 55% of Chrysler; Fiat "bought" Chrysler for nothing more than a promise to incorporate its technology into building Taggart Railroad, I mean, a more politically correct car while creditors are left swinging in the wind. Just a few minutes ago I heard our President announce that he'll propose that executive compensation for all public company executives will have to be approved by shareholders. C'm on, public companies disclose executive compensation in their SEC filings, and shareholders elect the boards who set the pay. Shareholders already have all the power they need if they're unhappy about executive pay.

Once upon a time, "the lunatics are running the assylum" was an expression. Not anymore. We are the inmates, and the straitjackets are just getting tighter.
