Conservatives love to play The Dark Knight realist hero. They want GWB remembered in that vein. Well, at the end of every movie, The Dark Knight retreats into the shadows away from society. He's not elected Mayor or President. Point is, torture should remain un-sanctioned. It should remain thought of as immoral. If one of our protectors ever finds himself in the position of Absolute Certainty, than he or she can make the decision to torture, to break conventions and mores and do what is necessary, and then face the legal ramifications like a stoic hero. Then society can go through the necessary hand wringing and prosecutions to protect its moral structure. If our protectors are willing to die for the sake of our society, surely they'd do a little hard time to protect it too. A Win - win for everyone. If the “torture” isn't taking place on American soil, or against American citizens, I couldn't care less. I've haven't seen or heard of any evidence of the CIA “torturing” someone as innocent as, say, an office worker on the 33rd floor of the WTC on 9-11-01; considering how our enemies have a penchant for sawing off heads and cheering released terrorists, I can live with the CIA giving Khalid Sheik Mohammed a much needed bath.
