Barry O: The So-Called Founders Didn’t Redistribute Wealth

mickey-o

***MONDAY UPDATE: Here’s why these quotes are so plausible — Barry has been on board the redistribution train for a long time. This is a link to an NPR interview with Barry, circa 2001, in his own words and voice. Enjoy.***

There are many who will defend the ‘free market.’ But who will defend the single mother of four working three jobs. When a system is allowed to be free at the expense of its citizens, then it is tyranny.

… the Constitution allows for many things, but what it does not allow is the most revealing. The so-called Founders did not allow for economic freedom. While political freedom is supposedly a cornerstone of the document, the distribution of wealth is not even mentioned. While many believed that the new Constitution gave them liberty, it instead fitted them with the shackles of hypocrisy.

This is from the college thesis written by Barack Obama.

I’d give you the rest for context, but it’s sealed like a state secret. Hmmmm.

If Barry has his doubts about the constitution, is it okay for me to have my doubts about him?

(Hat tip.)

Update Friday Afternoon: The source for this particular Obama endorsement of redistribution appears questionable.

  1. Frank R says:

What strikes me first is his appalling ignorance or ignoring of historical fact. Private property and all that concept entails was indivisibly tied to the political freedoms that the Founders pushed for in severing ties from England. I am also struck by his ability to separate economic and political freedom. I honestly don’t understand how one who talks about distributing the wealth defines economic freedom. It’s as if wealth magically appears on the table to be divided by the hungry diners and will never run out.

There is also the irritating almost dismissive use of “so-called Founders.”

  2. Phillip J Hubbell says:

Barrack Obama is a serious creep as are those who voted for him and still expect miracles. I hope the republic can survive long enough financially to vote this gang out of office….hopefully they don’t do any damage that can’t be repaired. Geez…how did we get to be so stupid as a people to risk the country on this idiot?

  3. Doubts says:

While this certainly sounds like something The One would say, I can find no mention of this on Joe Kline’s Blog, and every web reference i find only links back to this mysterious Joe Kline blog post. I would really like to see some fact checking or a link to the actual paper or blog posting from a creditable source.

Having said that, whether Obama wrote this or not it I would bet my last dollar he agrees with every word of it.

“Having said that, whether Obama wrote this or not it I would bet my last dollar he agrees with every word of it.”

During his campaign he referenced the need for redistributing the wealth on a number of occasion. I would say your statement is very probably correct. He sure doesn’t seem to have a clue about economics . . . . . or foreign policy for that matter.

  6. Yes if only the Republicans would save us than everything would be just peachy.
Oh wait….. we had 8 years of war and out of control spending and now we have…. oh yeah, war and out of control spending.

If only we could get those other war mongering out of control corrupt spenders back.
    Then everything would be okay!

The banks own both parties, and while we fight about all these things, the federal reserve is giving trillions to banks who use it while it has value, and give us inflation and a descimated dollars, and it’s not just the stimulus or the bail outs, the wall street journal reports that the federal reserve has passed or agreed to back over 10 trillion dollars, this happened while the transition was going on between the parties.

Imagine how nice it would be to have trillions of dollars to buy whatever you like during a bust…. When the economy comes back the dollar will have less value. And guess what….. that’s the dollar the banks will use to pay back their trillion dollar zero interest loans.

So even if you think your getting paid back… it’s like loaning a dollar and getting 50 cents back.

My rant for the day…….. sorry if off topic.

True – we’d have pseudo- libertarians intentionally destroying the country.

“True – we’d have pseudo- libertarians intentionally destroying the country.”

If you think McCain is anywhere close to Libertarian then you haven’t been paying attention.

It doesn’t matter though. The latest poll shows that a majority of Americans trust Republicans more than Democrats on every major issue.

    Rasmussen

In fact, the GOP lead on these issues is higher than the Dem lead was a year ago. Having a (D) next to your name has became a huge electoral liability.

So what do the Dems keep doing? The same crap that is causing their massive drop in the polls, Cap & Trade, socialized medicine, and completely ignoring the economy. It’s as though they know there’s no way they’re keeping their majorities, so they’re just going to shove through as much socialist crap as possible over the next year. Problem is their own party isn’t playing along.

Electing corrupt Chicago style politicians to Washington didn’t work out as well as you thought it would, huh?

  11. Yeah those despotic Libertarians enjoy a legacy of genocide and death camps similar to Mao and Stalin, who seem to be revered by this Administration.

  12. When I think back on Bush’s career it’s hard for me to imagine it wasn’t actually intentionally bad. So bad in fact… that it would make almost anything sound good.
It took something so bad for people to be like…. “geez …anything”.

He managed to take tons of our freedom from the right, which we will probably not get back. Then the next administration comes in and takes our freedoms from the left.

It is pointless to argue between the two parties they both offer the same thing at the top, and then just divide us on the little stuff.

But for the record…. so we are clear, McCain, Pailen, Bill Maher and Glen Beck aren’t even pseudo Libertarians.

And that’s what you expect from today’s libertarians. Pseudo-libertarians, for lack of a better name, Disgruntled gun-nuts with nothing more than this simpleton’s reflexive ‘free-market’ opposition to all things governmental.

  15. Ahhh the old “you don’t agree with me & I am unable to reasonably debate you,” so I will call you names argument.
    Nice play.
It’s funny, I used to be a “government knows best” snob as well, until I read my way out of it.
Economics, it’s really helpful in debates and if you would take a look at what’s happened in America over the last 100 years… just economically, it becomes very intelligent to have a reflexive free market stance. It’s not easy to see if you are blinded by bias.

So if you can tout even one thing that the federal government has done well, I can show you 50 they have screwed up.

Personally I don’t bash Obama, because I don’t believe that one guy from Chicago is single handedly destroying the world. I am quite sure he is using both hands…. kidding. There are plenty of fish to fry in this government sucks debate and they come from all sides.

But I will say it takes real balls to call someone names when your name is Anonymous.

  17. Anonymous says:

” If you think McCain is anywhere close to Libertarian then you haven’t been paying attention”

What is a ‘libertarian?’ The only uniquely distinguishing characteristic is reflexive hatred of government. Where was Garrison and the gun freaks when the government was allowing Enron to rape, pillage and plunder? When Bush was launhing preemptive trillion dollar, off-budget wars?

Maybe if Bush had been black with a funny name the ‘libertarians’ would have started bitching in the 90s.

  18. Wow, you are a racist douche, and I was wondering why you sounded like an idiot. It’s because you are.

Your problem is you believe that any of this has to do with the color of someones skin.
This has to do with a great country going down the tubes because no one wants to stand up and say ENOUGH.
America as it should be stands up for the right of the individual, not white people, or black people or hispanic people…. For all people as individuals not as subdivided groups.
We all have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but we have no right to take it from someone else, and our government should have even less right.
This need for more government is found by ignorant people that want what they want, without considering what consequences their desires have on the bigger picture.

Government can not help the single black mother, without harming the single black male who kept it in his pants.
The taxes taken to take care of one, come from a job the other might have gotten etc.

Why I am argueing with you? It is pointless you have laid your cards on the table and shown yourself …. and you are a scumbag.

  19. Libertarains have been bitching since the 70′s.
We were bitching about Bush srs wars, and clintons wars, and bush jrs wars, and have consistently bitched about the governments cronie capitalism… for over 30 years.
So maybe you should check into it. Sounds like your kind of group actually, if you aren’t into war or cronie capitalism. Because the current administration is just more of the same.
If they were not more of the same they wouldn’t have gotten elected.
I mean the same people that drunkenly crashed our economy have now gotten into the tow truck to pull us out…… fantastic.

  20. Anonymous says:

“This has to do with a great country going down the tubes because no one wants to stand up and say ENOUGH.”

If you (or Garrison) were just saying ENOUGH, that’d be one thing. Garrison just cut and pasted a phony hoax story for the sole purpose of embarrassing Obama.

You don’t have to be a ‘libertarian’ to do that. You don’t have to be a gun-nut poseur to be fed up with Republicans and Democrats. That’s the problem with you ‘libertarians’ – you don’t stand for anything but hatred of government, except of course when the government is providing the infrastructure for your own personal goals.

  21. My personal goal is individual freedom, and I don’t agree with Trey on everything especially as I pointed out… what seems to be singling Obama out… but Obama is the one who is in office now… so it doesn’t make that much sense to scream BUSH SUCKS all day long.

We don’t stand for “hatred” of government we stand for less government and more personal responsibility and more freedom, we are fiscally conservative, and socially tolerant.

I don’t think you have had much experience with what being a libertarian stands for. …. and what do you stand for?

Less government is the only solution to our problems, it is not Utopia, but no one is putting utopia on the table.

  22. Anonymous says:

“My personal goal is individual freedom….”

Wow, you and 7 billion others! How much more vague and meaningless could you be? I’ll bet Bernie Madoff would love to have his “individual freedom” back. You put 350 million people in one country with unlimited guns, booze and free-for-all derivatives markets and no other goal that “individual freedom” and you have a recipe for utter chaos.

“Less government is the only solution to our problems,”

This is why only juvenile anarchists adopt the label “libertarian.”

  23. This is why debating you is pointless, you wait for one line you can pounce on as if then you know all.

Personal freedom as in Life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Government should exist to protect our rights… Bernie Maddoff is a prime example of someone who has trampled my rights.
Government should exist to protect us from people like Maddoff so again… you don’t know what your talking about.
I am not an anarchist, I am a realist.

You do not have “personal” freedom to steal from someone, you have personal freedom to mind your own business, unless somone has intruded on yours. When they do, that’s when government comes in.

Through cronie capitalism, quite the opposite has become true…. and the current administration is doing nothing to stop it. It’s getting worse, and people like you who seek to just lable everyone as “redneck, gun lover” are part of the problem.

You are the one who can’t see the forest through the trees here, and it’s clear you probably never will. Feel free to quote a few words and assume you have some idea what your talking about, but if you had any idea what I am saying you would be a Libertarian.

I’ve been uncharacteristically lurking here, but that is one of the most boneheaded statements I’ve seen lately.

So it’s been Congressional Republicans stymying Obama’s various health reform bills, has it?

My snap judgments of today’s contestants
Trey Garrison says ridiculous things sometimes, but he can be quite funny and is generally gracious when reasonably presented with other viewpoints; John Jay Myers speaks brilliantly and without untoward bias, nailing many things on the head — isn’t this guy some kind of perpetual candidate? — got my vote; Philip Hubbell is the sour-faced old soccer dad whom nobody else will let coach the soccer team, so he consoles himself that it’s because they’re dumb; Dallasite wears golfing garb on his days off, even if he’s not golfing — even if in fact he doesn’t golf … in idle moments, he reverts to practicing his “swing,” air-guitar style; Keith Johnson resides in a far-flung exurb, where he’s assumed terrifying debt in order to enjoy the usual panoply of consumer goods, electronics, and SUVs, and nothing make him madder than people who are irresponsible in their personal finances;and Anonymous is the very trailer-trash he accuses others of being — he does, however, in an oblique way, make a compelling case for gun control.

Oh, and Jack Jett? — Didn’t really see him up there in the cheap seats, but did you know he knows Sandra Bernhard on a first-name basis?

All right, open season on me, then. And no, Dallasite, I haven’t lived with my mother since St. Reagan was in the hot seat.

  43. keith johnson says:

Daniel what kind of pressure do you think those blue dog Democrats are under behind the scenes?

…Dallasite wears golfing garb on his days off, even if he’s not golfing — even if in fact he doesn’t golf … in idle moments, he reverts to practicing his “swing,” air-guitar style…

I beg to differ. I don’t play golf, or have a golf swing, but I do practice air guitar, “golf” style. Other than that, spot on.

  47. Daniel says:

For what it’s worth, I’ve been told I’m a bong-hitting divorcee who drives a 10-year-old Volvo, lives near Skillman Street and never gets invited to dinner. I spend a good deal of my waking life seething at the material possessions that an anonymous blog commenter assures me he has.

I’ve also been told I live in my mother’s basement — which tracks with the other assumptions, I suppose, provided my mother lives near Skillman Street, and that there is a residential structure in Texas with a basement.

  50. Dallasite says:

    “Maybe you should create one.”

I’m sure someone more creative than me can come up with better ones, but here’s a few:

A man should move out of his mother’s basement before demanding services paid for by others.

Our Constitution guarantees many Rights, but it does not guarantee that your mom will let you live in her basement.

Many lonely men have spent many lonely nights in their mother’s lonely basement.

Put down the bong, get a haircut, and for God’s sake, move out of your mother’s basement. In other words, grow up.

    Anybody else?
